Seizures can be sudden, unpredictable, and distressing to witness – but with the right first aid knowledge, you can help protect the person and potentially save a life.
In this Trainers’ Corner video, Onelife trainers Rosie and Steve break down what to do if you see someone having a seizure. This is one of the most commonly asked-about scenarios in our courses, and it’s one where calm, clear action makes all the difference.
What is a seizure?
Seizures can be caused by a variety of conditions, including epilepsy, head injury, or fever. They can vary in intensity and appearance, but often involve sudden muscle spasms or loss of consciousness.
First Aid for Seizures – Key Steps:
-
Stay calm and check your surroundings.
-
Do not restrain the person – allow the seizure to run its course.
-
Protect them from injury – move objects out of the way, cushion the head if possible.
-
Time the seizure – if it lasts more than 5 minutes, call 999.
-
After the seizure, place the person in the recovery position and stay with them until fully conscious.
Rosie and Steve explain all this and more in the video – in a relaxed, trainer-led style that mirrors what we do in real-life courses.
