As part of our First Aid FAQ series, Nigel Davis is answering common questions we hear during training sessions.
This time, he’s tackling a practical one:
What do you actually find inside a defibrillator kit?
Most people expect the defibrillator unit itself—but there’s more to it. These kits are designed to help you act fast in an emergency, and that means including a few extra essentials:
-
A razor – used to shave the chest if there’s a lot of hair, so the electrode pads can stick properly.
-
A dry cloth or towel – to remove moisture from the chest before applying the pads.
-
Scissors – to quickly cut away clothing and access the chest.
- A face shield – to safely assist with rescue breaths if CPR is required.
These additions may seem small, but they play a big role in ensuring the AED can be used safely and effectively.
Whether you’re refreshing your first aid knowledge or preparing to use an AED in a real emergency, understanding these tools ahead of time can make all the difference.
