Bumps and bruises are part of everyday life – especially with children, sports, and busy environments. Most of the time, they’re minor and will settle on their own. But when a knock involves the head, it’s important to slow down, assess properly, and know what to watch for.
In this Trainer’s Corner video, Onelife trainers Charlene, Emilia, Rosie and Steve talk through how to deal with bumps, bruises and head injuries in a clear, practical way.
Treating bumps and bruises
A bruise is simply bleeding under the skin, and swelling is the body’s natural response to injury.
For most bumps and bruises:
-
Apply a cold compress or ice pack (wrapped in a towel)
-
Monitor the area for swelling and pain
-
Most minor injuries will improve within 24 hours
Bruising and swelling on their own aren’t usually a cause for concern — but location matters. Injuries to joints or the head need extra attention.
Why head injuries are different
Head injuries always need careful monitoring, particularly in children, older adults, and anyone on blood-thinning medication.
Things to look out for include:
-
Feeling sick or vomiting
-
Dizziness, confusion or drowsiness
-
Headache that doesn’t improve
-
Changes in behaviour or personality
-
Blurred vision or sensitivity to light
-
Unequal or non-reactive pupils
-
Changes in movement or coordination
One of the most important things to watch for is deterioration over time. If symptoms worsen, this is a medical emergency.
Concussion vs compression
Concussion occurs when the brain is shaken inside the skull and often improves with rest, but still needs medical assessment.
Compression happens when pressure builds inside the skull and is far more serious – this requires urgent medical attention.
If in doubt, always get head injuries checked. With children, it’s best to err on the side of caution and attend A&E.
