In this FAQ edition, Nigel talks through one of the most important, and understandably most daunting, first aid skills: how to give CPR to a baby.
A situation no one wants to face – but one that’s vital to prepare for.
Baby CPR is different from adult CPR, and the idea of needing to use it can feel overwhelming. But with some calm, clear guidance, it’s a skill anyone can learn.
Nigel explains each step in a way that’s easy to follow, helping you feel more confident about what to do if the unthinkable happens.
Here’s a quick breakdown of what’s covered in the video:
Check for danger
As with any first aid scenario, the very first thing is to make sure the environment is safe for you and the baby.
Check for a response
With babies, it can be harder to tell if they’re responsive. Nigel demonstrates gently giving the baby a little shake and calling their name.
Open the airway
If there’s no response, it’s time to open the airway. With a baby, this is done more gently than with an adult.
Tilt the head into a neutral position, just a small movement. If you tilt too far back, it can actually close the airway again.
Look inside the mouth
Have a quick look inside, but don’t put your fingers in, as this can be dangerous.
Give 5 rescue breaths
If the baby isn’t breathing, give 5 gentle rescue breaths, making a seal over their nose and mouth. You’re looking for a slight rise in the chest with each breath, no big puffs needed.
Start chest compressions
-
Use two fingers in the centre of the baby’s chest (just below the nipple line).
-
Push down about one-third of the chest depth.
-
Nigel recommends 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths — and repeating that cycle.
Continue CPR
Keep going with 30 compressions and 2 breaths until the baby shows signs of recovery or help arrives.
Nigel’s message throughout is simple and encouraging: doing something is better than doing nothing. You don’t have to be perfect, what matters is taking action.
Take a few minutes to watch the full video, it could help you stay calm and take action when it really counts.
